Shopify's media uploader will not take the .heic files your iPhone produces. Convert the shoot below and drag the JPGs straight into your product listings.

Queued—
Shopify's media library validates uploads against a fixed list of image types — JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP — and HEIC is not on it. The file is refused before anything is read, which is why you get a format error rather than a broken listing.
There is a second reason to convert even where a HEIC squeezes through a third-party app: Shopify generates a dozen resized variants of every product image for thumbnails, zoom, collection grids and your theme's responsive srcset. Those pipelines expect formats they can decode.
Photos come back at their original pixel dimensions, so a 12 MP iPhone shot stays well above Shopify's recommended 2048 × 2048 for zoom. Nothing is downscaled and no watermark is added.
Filenames survive intact too, which matters more than it sounds — descriptive filenames become part of your image SEO, and a batch that keeps its naming stays sorted when you bulk upload.
Drag the folder onto the box above or press Select Files. Every HEIC joins the queue and conversion starts automatically.
Download individually or take the batch as a ZIP, then add them to the product in Shopify admin as normal.
Your JPGs carry no EXIF metadata.
Conversion re-encodes pixels only, so capture dates, GPS coordinates and camera details are not carried across. That is usually what you want for anything published, but keep your original .heic files if those timestamps matter to you.
Not through the standard product media uploader. Shopify accepts JPEG, PNG, GIF and WebP; a .heic file is rejected on sight. Converting to JPG is the reliable route, and JPG is what Shopify's own image pipeline is tuned for.
Shopify recommends square images around 2048 × 2048 pixels so that zoom stays sharp, with a hard ceiling of 20 MB and 4472 × 4472 pixels per file. A 12 MP iPhone photo clears the recommendation comfortably. This tool does not crop, so square framing needs a crop step in Photos or Preview first.
No. The decoder is a WebAssembly module that runs inside your browser tab, so the photo is read from your device into memory and converted there. You can check it in your browser's Network tab, or disconnect from the internet once the page has loaded and convert anyway.
